Catherine Callaghan Abell '80

Catherine "Kitty" Callaghan Abell will be the second womaninducted into the Franklin and Marshall Sports Hall of Fame. Sheleft her mark on the College through her outstanding swimmingcareer. Abell swam backstroke, freestyle, individual medley, andsome relay events and was the dominant member of the women's teamduring her four-year career. She established F&M women'srecords in four events. Although injured her junior year, shedominated the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship meet forthree years winning three firsts, four seconds, and threethirds.

Abell closed out her swimming career in 1979-80 when shequalified for the NCAA Division III Nationals in three events:200-yard backstroke, 200-yard freestyle, and the 500-yardfreestyle. She achieved All American honors by finishing ninth inthe 200-yard backstroke and 11th in the 100-yard backstroke. Shedid not place in the 500-yard freestyle, but her time of 5:26.0 seta new F&M record in her last event. Following graduation as agovernment major in 1980, Abell worked as a congressional aidduring the 1980s. She recently married and now manages King?sCollection, Inc., in Falls Church, Virginia.
