Robert H. Schell '50 came from Philadelphia to Franklin andMarshall College where he earned a bachelor's degree and teachingcertification, followed by an M.Ed. degree from Pennsylvania StateUniversity, and a D.Ed from Temple University. A Pennsylvania statehigh school wrestling champion at 120-pounds in 1944, Schell carvedout an equally impressive record for the post-war Diplomatwrestling squad. As a freshman, Schell wrestled between 128 and 136pounds, and had a 3-1 record on a team that went 10-1 and won theMiddle Atlantic League title.
The following year, F&M joined the prestigious EasternIntercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). The team won 14 of 15matches on their way to a second consecutive Middle Atlantic Leaguetitle. Wrestling between121 and 136 pounds, Schell posted anundefeated record of 10-0-0, which included the college's firstindividual EIWA title at 121 pounds. Schell won 11 and lost 5against the best teams in the country during his final twocollegiate seasons.
At the end of his senior year, Schell qualified for the NCAAtournament, and finished his career with 24 wins and 6 losses.During his career, Schell was coached by two other F&M SportsHall of Fame members, Dr. W. Austin Bishop and W. Roy Phillips.Following graduation, Schell pursued a career in public educationas a successful teacher, coach, and administrator. He and his wifePolly, live in Mechanicsburg.
