Ross Hamsher, better known as Monk,was one of "Uncle Charlie"Mayser's all-time wrestlers. Over a four-year period, he compiled a33-1 record, which included 22 falls. His only loss was to DaveBrand, an Olympic wrestler. The second time they met, Monk pinnedhim in 33 seconds. He also competed in gymnastics and in swimming,and was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He earned hisbachelor's degree as an economics major. He coached the HarrisburgYMCA wrestling team to two state championships and won tow statetitles himself. He won the national "Y" 175-pound title while hewrestled at 145 pounds. He also wrestled for the undefeated ChapelHill Navy team. During World War II, he was an instructor in theNavy V-5 program at Annapolis where he served with the late "Bear"Bryant and, as he says, other notables. He is retired from hisposition as a district representative for the Louisiana CreditUnion League in New Orleans where he and his wife, Alice, live.
