Morris Clothier '87 came to the college after graduation fromthe Haverford School. During his four seasons, Clothier playedalmost exclusively at the #1 position. As a first year student, hecompiled a 12-4 record against the best players in the country. Hisregular season record earned him the #11 seed at the United StatesIntercollegiate Squash Racquets Association championships. He wontwo rounds and was named a first team All-American. Clothier'ssophomore year was also outstanding. The team's record was 14-3against the best teams in the country, with victories over Penn,Yale, and Princeton. The only losses were to Trinity, Harvard, andNavy. A team highlight came in an away match against Princeton.
The headline on the December 13, 1984 issue of The DailyPrincetonian said it all: "Diplomats Shock Racquetmen, 5-4." It'sthe first time we've lost to anyone except Harvard since I've beenhere," said Princeton captain Bill Ullman. In the final match,#1Princeton player Fazal Sheikh had lost the first two games toClothier, but came back to win the third game and led in the fourth6-2. At that point, Clothier reeled off a spectacular string of 10straight points to eventually win the game and the match. The teamwas ranked 3rd at the end of the season with a 14-3 record and wasawarded the Barnaby Trophy as the most improved team. Clothier,with a 15-5 individual record, was named a first teamAll-American.
As a junior, Clothier led the Diplomats to another great yearwith the team's record being 12-5. Individually, Clothier was 12-4.Competing in the USSRA national amateur tournament, he reached thesemifinals before losing. At the end of the year, he was namedfirst team All-American, for the third consecutive year, and alsoteam MVP. Clothier?s senior season would cap an incredible career.The Diplomats completed its season 15-1 with their only loss comingagainst Harvard (7-2), the defending national champion. Clothierclosed out his career by being named a first team All-American forthe fourth time.
His career collegiate record was 54-15 following a 16-3 seniorseason. Clothier was named F&M's 1987 Outstanding Senior MaleAthlete. He also has the distinction of having been a two-timenational singles champion in the sport of court tennis. He has alsoshared the U.S. father-son court tennis title with his father,William, five times. Following graduation with a bachelor's degreein government, Clothier went to work in the securities field. Hecurrently lives in New York City where he works as head of OTCTrading for Lazard Freres in Rockerfeller Center.
