Owen T. “Red” Horner '27

Owen "Red" Horner was a member of the first intercollegiatewrestling team at F&M, and helped start a tradition ofexcellence that continues to this day. A three-year captain, Hornerwrestled at 145 pounds. His career record included 23 wins, 3losses with 9 of the wins coming via falls. The 1926 team wentundefeated, beating teams like West Point, Princeton, Duke, andSyracuse en route to its unblemished record. He was also active incampus affairs, which included membership in Delta Sigma Phifraternity. Following graduation, Horner's dedication to his sportcontinued as he returned home to teach industrial arts andintroduce wrestling at Boswell (Pa.) High School. He coached forover 20 years, producing three state champion and 30 districtchampions. Following his retirement, Coach Charles Mayser namedHorner to the "Charley Mayser All Star Team." Owen was the first ofseven Horners to attend Franklin and Marshall College. He passedaway in 1987.
