Sam Roeder was born in East Greenville, Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelors degree at Franklin & Marshall College in 1939. In addition to being named to the Franklin & Marshall Sports Hall of Fame, he was the Eastern Pennsylvania Football high scorer in 1938.

Following the 1937 season, Roeder was given honorable mention on Grantland Rice's Collier's All-America team at fullback. In 1938, he was named to the All-State and Little All-America first teams.

In 1980, he retired after working as a chemist and chief of testing lab for the former New Jersey Zinc Company. He was a former member of the Palmerton Area School Board and secretary of the Palmerton Area School Authority.
