Carrie Bowen (Toomey) was a four-year starter on some of thebest F&M women’s basketball teams in school history. At5’10” she played forward and was a relentless worker,rebounding with reckless abandon, and possessing a great jump hookshot.
During her four-year career, the Diplomats were MAC-South champsin 1990 with a record of 25-5. The next three years, the Dips wereMAC-Southwest league champs, losing in the overall leaguechampionship game each year. The team’s record during thatperiod was 21-6, 19-7 and 19-5. The team’s overallrecord during Carrie’s career was 84-23.
In both 1990 and 1991, the team was selected for the NCAADivision III tournament but lost in the first round each year.
Carrie was named to the MAC-Southwest All Conference first teamthree years in a row and was her league’s MVP her junior andsenior years. She was also named to the ECAC South first AllConference team her junior and senior years.
Regionally she was named to the WBCA Mid Atlantic first team andwas accorded the Honorable Mention All American Honors by theWBCA. The women’s basketball Gazette magazine namedCarried to their third team All American.
During her playing career, Carrie got progressively better as ascorer. She averaged 13.6 points per game as a freshman, 13.8as a sophomore, 16.8 as a junior and 20.1 as a senior.
At the end of her playing career Carrie ranked high in six alltime career statistical categories: 2nd in scoring with 1,686points, 4th in rebounding with 821, 4th in 3 point field goals with54, 3rd in assists with 276, 3rd in steals with 226 and 3rd inblocks with 141.
Following graduation, Carrie played professional basketball inEngland for one year with the Avesta Sheffield Hatters in theEnglish National League.
