Kathryn “Trink” Prinz Schwartz '82

A native of Garrett Park, Md., "Trink" quickly establishedherself as a swimming force to be reckoned with. As a freshman, sheled the women's team in scoring and qualified for the AIAW NationalChampionships in Reno, Nev. Swimming in the individual medley andthe 100-yard backstroke, Trink broke through to the finals whereshe finished 8th and became F&M's first All-American womanswimmer. During her four year career, Kathryn won and dominated ahost of MAC championship events, even though she swam with injuriespart of the time. Her 1980 season was particularly outstanding, asshe became an All-American in three events.

She was a member of F&M's record setting 400-yard medleyrelay (4:18.2) and then finished 5th in the 50-yard backstroke, 6thin the 100-yard backstroke and 2nd in the 200-yard backstroke atnational championships. She closed out her career in championshipfashion with two victories in the MAC championships. She then wonthe NCAA Division III title in the 50-yard backstroke in recordtime (28.6). She also finished 3rd in the 200-yard backstroke, 4thin the 100-yard backstroke, and 5th n the 200-yard individualmedley.

At the completion of her career, Trink held three F&Mindividual records, one relay mark, the MAC 200-yard backstrokerecord, and was an 11-time All-American. She was named F&M's"Outstanding Senior Athlete-Woman" in 1982 and was awarded an NCAApost-graduate scholarship. A history major, Trink would laterreceive her master's degree in history from American University.She taught at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School before she marriedand moved to New Jersey. Law school may be in the immediate future.In a recent swimming race, Trink finished 220th out of 800 swimmersin a 4 ? mile swim across the Chesapeake Bay.
