Mary L. Schapiro '77

The 1977 Michael T.M. Karvasales Award recipient, Schapiro was amember of Franklin & Marshall's first varsity field hockey andlacrosse teams when the sports jumped from club to varsitystatus.  She was also a member of F&M's badminton teamfrom 1974 through 1976.

She earned three letters and captained the 1975 and 1976 fieldhockey teams. The 1976 team finished the season with a record of14-3-2. She was also F&M's first varsity lacrosse captain as asenior. After several seasons of club status, the 1977 Diplomatswere a 7-4 varsity squad under the direction of Martha Swope.

Schapiro was named one of 18 members to the Black Pyramid Societyin 1977. The society is made up of seniors, who in the judgment oftheir peers, have achieved the highest levels of scholarship andextracurricular activities at F&M. Schapiro's ties to theCollege remain strong. She was formerly a member of Franklin &Marshall's Board of Trustees.

Schapiro earned her J.D. from George Washington University andserved as the CEO of FINRA. She is currently the 29th Chairman ofthe U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. She was appointed byPresident Barack Obama on January 20, 2009, unanimously confirmedby the U.S. Senate, and sworn in on January 27, 2009. She is thefirst woman to serve as the agency's permanent Chairman.
