Jennifer Whiting '78

Jennifer Whiting began her career at F&M just as themomentum for developing women's varsity sports was beginning.Squash was one of the first sports sponsored on the varsity levelfor women, starting with the 1974-75 season, and Whiting was one ofthe early top performers. The number of institutions playingvarsity women's squash during Whiting's career was limited, as werethe tournament and competitive opportunities available compared tothe schedule present-day players face. Nonetheless, Whiting was oneof the top players nationally and the best player in F&Mhistory at that time. Whiting was a four-year letterwinner, playingmostly in the number one position her junior and senior seasonswhen she was named team MVP.

While complete career statistical records are unavailable,Whiting did have an 11-5 record in 1976-77 and followed that with a16-7 record her senior year. She received Honorable MentionAll-American status at the National Women's Intercollegiate SquashTournament, the highest honor an F&M woman squash player hadever received. At commencement, Whiting received the prestigiousWilliamson Award. Given to the senior reaching the higheststandards of character, leadership, and scholarship. Followinggraduation in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy, shecontinued to progress academically and athletically.

She received a master's (1981) and Ph.D (1984) in philosophyfrom Cornell University. While earning her graduate degrees,Whiting was a Top 20 nationally ranked player in the United StatesSquash Racquets Association (USSRA) for three years. Her finalranking was 19th in 1979, 15th in 1980, and 10th in 1981, when shefinished in eighth place in the USSRA national championshiptournament. Now a professor at the University of Pittsburgh,Whiting is currently on sabbatical doing research in Palo Alto,CA
