Henry Lane '72

Henry Lane came to Franklin & Marshall as a very successfulhigh school athlete. His collegiate career mirrored his early yearsas he became one of the few male athletes in modern times to earnnine varsity letters in three sports (freshman were not eligiblefor varsity teams or he might have been a 12 letter man). In thefall he played soccer. While the team only had a 6-24-1 recordduring those years, Henry was a bright light. He was named to theMAC All-Conference team in both 1970 and 1971 and received theGerald Burgholzer Award as the team's MVP during the same years. Hewas elected captain by the 1971 team. 

During the winter season, Henry played squash, and did so wellplaying at the top of the team ladder. While his individualcompetitive record is not available, the team compiled a 19-17record during his career playing a very competitive schedule. Lanewas named captain of the team and was also given the BertramDrucker Award as the team's MVP in both 1970 and 1971. Lacrosse wasthe sport in which Henry achieved his greatest team success. Anattackman, Lane's team compiled a 29-6 record during his threeyears. His senior year, the Diplomats qualified for the U.S.Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) playoffs. In the finalgame of the year, the team's only loss, Lane's shot hit theWashington College crossbar with 30 seconds left of a tie game.

    A Washington College player too the reboundand sprinted the length of the field to score as time ran out.While disappointed, Lane and his teammates handled the defeat inthe sportsmanlike manner coach Ross Sach's teams were noted for.Lane's career highlight can at the annual F&M Award Dayceremony when he was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete for1971-72. Lane earned his B.A. from Franklin & Marshall with amajor in comparative literature. He later earned a MALS fromVillanova University. Presently, he lives in Erdenheim, and worksat Chestnut Hill Academy where he is an English teacher. In his"spare time" he also coaches the C.H.A. boy's soccer and squashteams.
