According to Coach Patricia Epps, Anne Williams was one of thebest and toughest tennis players to grace the Diplomat courts.Williams, from Woodbury, N.J., was the first F&M women's tennisplayer to earn All-American honors twice during her career and isstill among the team's career wins leaders. She began her career asa freshman by breaking into an already strong lineup at the #2position. Her 7-1 singles record that year was an indication ofthings to come. She also had a 5-1 doubles record and was one ofthe F&M entrants in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis CoachesAssociation (ITCA) tournament.
During her sophomore season, Williams solidified her hold on the#2 position and finished the season with a 31-5 singles record and26-1 doubles record. She was paired with #1 player Janet Amarilloand went undefeated during the dual meet season, won the MACDoubles Tournament championship before losing in the first round ofthe NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship for their onlyloss of the season. She qualified for the ITCA Small CollegeTournament and was an entrant in the Rolex Eastern Regionals. In1986-87, Williams advanced to the #1 singles position on the teamand continued to play at the #1 doubles position. Her singlesrecord was 19-3 and doubles mark 16-4.
At the completion of the dual meet season, Williams was therunner up in the MAC Singles Champiohship before progressing to theNCAA Division III national singles championship tournament. Sheadvanced to the third round with victories over players fromPomona-Pitzer and Hope Colleges. She ended the year ranked #7nationally among all Division III singles players and #16 amongDivision III doubles teams, which earned her All-American honors.Williams was the captain and team MVP her senior year, as sherecorded a 16-9 singles record and 19-5 doubles record.
He repeated as the MAC doubles champion and ended her careerranked in the Top 8 nationally, which brought her All-Americanhonors for the second consecutive year. The women's team finished4th in the NCAA championships, their best finish up to that point.She ended her career with a singles record of 73-18, all at the #1or #2 positions on the team.
Her doubles record was an equally impressive 76-11. During thisperiod, the team won the MAC team championship four consecutiveyears. Williams still lives in Woodbury, N.J., and works as thesales manager for Holman Enterprise in Maple Shade, N.J.
