A basketball standout, John DeBold earned four varsity letters in the sport while at Franklin & Marshall. He was an excellent playmaker and defensive player, as well as a high scorer. During his career, he established a 41-12 record, (78% winning percentage). He played in 17 of 18 games each season. In this era of basketball, F&M was in a seven-team league, meaning each team played all other teams home and away. In the 1940-41 season, F&M was undefeated, marking the only time this ever happened. The next year, the team only lost three games to CCNY, Rhode Island State and Santa Clara.

DeBold was named the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Basketball League most valuable player following the 1939-40 season.

After graduation, DeBold became a sales representative for the United Elastics Division of the J.P. Stevenson & Co.
