Larry Shadek was a two-sport athlete at Franklin & Marshall from 1969-72. What made Shadek’s career most interesting was that he was not the typical multi-sport athlete, predominately committed to one sport and merely dabbling in a second to remain in shape in the off-season. For three years Shadek started at the pre-eminent position, quarterback, on the football team and in the spring he was the starting shortstop for the baseball squad, hitting second or third in the batting order. He is also being honored for his thirty years of immeasurable support to Franklin & Marshall College both philanthropically and as a member of the Board of Trustees.
In his senior season on the gridiron, Shadek led F&M to the 1971 Middle-Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championship. During the season Shadek also broke the record for total yards in a season by logging 1,430 yards, 97 more than the previous record.
The following spring, Shadek continued his athletic exploits in a stellar senior baseball season. A two-time captain for the Diplomats, Shadek was second in the MAC with 13 runs scored and in the top ten for batting with a .372 average in conference play. For his efforts Shadek was named to the All-MAC Honorable Mention team for the 1972 season.
Upon graduation from Franklin & Marshall in 1972, Shadek earned an MBA from NYU and was employed by Wellington Shields & Co. as an Investment Adviser. He has maintained close ties with Franklin & Marshall and the school is proud to honor his relationship with the college over the past 30 years as well as his athletic achievements.
Larry Shadek has continued the Shadek family legacy of volunteerism and philanthropy at Franklin & Marshall. He serves as an active member of the Board of Trustees and is deeply involved in a variety of areas on the F&M Board. He serves on the Advancement Committee, the Buildings, Grounds and Sustainability Committee and the Investment Committee. Furthermore, he supports the Diplomat Athletic Club and serves on their executive committee. He is a driving force behind the Shadek Stadium project and has been very generous with his support of the financial aid office and Athletic Department.
He is an active participant and supporter in numerous building campaigns, including the Ann & Richard Barshinger Life Sciences & Philosophy Building and the Patricia E. Harris Building for Business, Government & Public Policy. Shadek is a tireless recruiter of student applicants and shares with them the benefits of a Franklin & Marshall education.
He and his wife Pat have three sons, Mark, Chris and Greg and have welcomed a grandson, Logan Mark Shadek.
