Harry Smoker '32

Harry "Red" Smoker was as diverse an athlete as F&M hasseen, not only playing, but starring in football, basketball, andbaseball during his career. On the gridiron, he was an end andtackle, receiving honorable mention on the All Eastern Conferenceteam in 1931. On the hardwood, Smoker was the team's leading scorerin the 1931-32 season, contributing 134 points and being named tothe second team All Eastern Conference team. In addition, Coach J.Shober Barr named Smoker to his first team, All Eastern League.


On the diamond, he was also a star and only the temporarydiscontinuation of baseball as an intercollegiate sport preventedhim from greater honors. Still, he managed to strike out 14Bucknell hitters in one game and slam two homers in 1930. Inaddition to his athletic exploits, he was a member of Black Pyramidand the Student Senate. He graduated in 1932 with a B.S. degree andlater received an M. Ed. Degree from Penn State University. Smokerreturned to his hometown of Columbia (Pa.) and became principal andlater superintendent of the Columbia school system. He passed awayin 1978 at the age of 68.
